How we teach

Every child is taught by a person, to a personalised curriculum, in an environment built to be warm before it is demanding. Within that, two specialisms run deep.

Specialism one

Creative writing that earns its marks

At schools like Tiffin, the writing task is where places are won and lost, and it is the part of the exam least like anything school prepares children for. Vague encouragement ("add more description!") doesn't move marks.

We teach writing as a craft with parts, marked against the kind of criteria real examiners use. A taste of the toolkit: show, don't tell (not "she was scared" but "her hand wouldn't turn the door handle"); sentence-length control, long sentences to build the tension and then short ones to snap it; and the drop-in opening, starting mid-action so the examiner is inside the story by line two. Children learn to redraft, because that's where writers are made.

Specialism two

Worded problems, made calm

The hardest 11+ maths questions aren't hard arithmetic; they're short stories with numbers hidden in them. Children who panic at them usually can do the maths, they just can't find it in the words.

We teach a consistent method: read, extract, represent, solve, check. Practised until it's automatic, it turns a five-line question into a sequence of small, familiar steps, and turns the child who "can't do problem solving" into one who quietly enjoys it.

The environment underneath it all

Confidence, taught deliberately

Progress is made visible to the child, effort is praised specifically, and every child experiences being good at something early and often. Belief is built, not hoped for.

good work! ⭐

Personalised, genuinely

Every child works to a curriculum built around where they are now, not where a scheme of work says they should be. Starting points differ; the destination doesn't have to.

your child's plan, not "the" plan

Nurture before pressure

The 11+ is demanding enough without lessons adding fear to it. Children work hard here because they feel safe here, and parents get honesty, not hype, about how it's going.

kind and rigorous — both

In person or online

Lessons run face to face and as live online sessions for families further afield. Same tutor, same personalised curriculum, same marked work; the screen changes nothing about the standard.

Taught, not automated

Every lesson is taught directly by a tutor. We use modern tools behind the scenes where they sharpen preparation, but no child at The Learnery is ever handed to a screen and left there. The relationship between tutor and child is the product.
